On Paper/With Paper

Works on Paper

Katy works between two and three dimensions by using paper in different ways. How each type of paper responds to media used is important in creating each drawing. Whether, using a smooth Japanese printmaking paper or a thick watercolour paper, the feedback recieved from the contact of mark to surface informs how each drawing evolves. “Im sometimes looking for absorbance and, at other times, I want the graphite/oil pastel/acrylic, to sit on top of the paper” she says. “Clara” above, is created with coloured pencil and graphite on cartridge paper with some of the cartridge paper exposed by omitting marks and shapes.

Works made With Paper (and Other Materials)

As a sheet material, paper can layer, bend or fold into new shapes, beyond its flat beginnings. This piece, “Bat Fish Crazy” is made from wallpaper, acrylic paint and can be displayed tightly wound or trailing down a wall. Using something as ubiquitous as paper in a variety of ways is a way to understand it as technology and capacity to communicate. In a digital world it has so much tangibility. Katy sometimes combines it with other materials such as MDF, wood or fabric to create new assemblages.
